NYC Street Named For JOEY RAMONE
November 30, 2003The corner of Second Street and Bowery near the legendary CBGBs club in New York City has been officially christened "Joey Ramone Place" for THE RAMONES' lead singer, who died of cancer in 2001 at 49. Check out pictures from Film Magic, Newsday.
"Joey was a true New Yorker," said bandmate Marky Ramone at the unveiling, which took place Sunday (Nov. 30).
"This honor today conveys what a monolith of talent he was."
"Joey loved this neighborhood. He loved its streets," his mother, Charlotte Lesher, said.
"He took 'to be or not to be' and made it into 'I don't want to walk around with you,"' said rock photographer Jim Marshall, referring to the lyrical hook of a classic RAMONES song. "It's really not that far apart, is it?"
"New York City is both a physical place and a zone of expressiveness," said filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. "It's so cool when a physical place can actually reflect a certain time, place and creative energy.
"So New York has Charlie Parker Place, Herman Melville Square, Edgar Allan Poe Street, Joe DiMaggio Highway ... and now Joey Ramone Place."
